SEATTLE – The University of Washington softball team earned a pair of shutout wins on the second day of the Husky Fall Classic on Saturday (Oct. 10). The Huskies pounded out 20 hits, including six extra-base hits, to overwhelm Wenatchee Valley College, 22-0 (5). The Dawgs also beat Western Washington, 1-0, in the opening game of the day.
Freshman pitcher Taran Alvelo tossed a 1-0 complete-game shutout against Western. The right-hander was stingy in the circle, striking out 17 Viking batters. She struck out the side in the second, third and sixth innings and with the tying run in scoring position, closed the game with a punchout in the seventh. Alvelo faced just three batters over the minimum of 21, allowing two hits, but followed each hit up with a strikeout to preserve the shutout.
Senior Kimberlee Souza headlined the Husky offense, pushing across the contest's lone run on a sixth-inning double. Despite making solid contact, Washington was limited to just four hits, in large part due to a Viking defense that made several notable plays to keep the Husky baserunners at bay.
Western's best opportunity came after a leadoff single in the seventh. After Alvelo responded with a strikeout, the Vikings smoked a one-hopper to right-fielder Krystal Aubert who used her cannon of an arm to throw out the runner at first for the second out. Alvelo then struck out the final batter to preserve the shutout.
Junior Ali Aguilar initiated the Husky rally in the sixth, drawing a one-out walk. She came home when Souza knocked a double into right field in the next at-bat.
Sophomore Madi Schreyer earned game two's decision against Wenatchee Valley behind six strikeouts and one hit through five innings.
The Huskies had 12 different batters who recorded at least one hit with Souza, junior Casey Stangel and sophomore Julia DePonte leading the way with three RBI.
Washington concludes the Husky Fall Classic tomorrow (Oct. 11) at 5 p.m. against Central Washington.
