The Huskies have 13 new faces on the roster this season. GoHuskies.com will present "Getting to know" segments on the newcomers leading up to the season. Up today, catcher Andy Cosgrove.
Since you are from nearby Kirkland, did you grow up a Husky fan?
Yeah, ever since I grew up right across the lake. I've always loved coming over here with my purple on.
What is your first Husky sports memory?
I came to a football game during Jake Locker's sophomore year when he had a big breakout game against UCLA or Cal, I think. I remember we had to park way on the other side of the baseball field and ran to the game because we were late. I think we picked up a 'W' that day.
Speaking of the baseball field, what do you think of the new facilities?
It's gorgeous. The park is beautiful. It's crazy what some big changes can do. I feel like it turns around a whole program. You go from the mindset of having a pretty good field to every single time I walk outside it's amazing that this is where I get to spend my day.
I imagine you're a Seahawks fan since you're local. Are you pumped for the Super Bowl?
When you're a local kid, you grow up and you like the sports teams that are closest to you. Growing up around here the Seahawks are huge, and I'm excited for Sunday.
What has been the biggest adjustment on moving from high school to college?
Just the level of talent. Every single kid on this team went from being the guy at their high school to now being a guy at a big school. It's tough going from big fish in a little pond to little fish in a big pond. Seeing so many guys who you want to be as good as, what you want to develop as, is different than in high school where guys would look at you and think the same thing.
What is your projected role on the team?
This year I'm just looking to watch the older guys and get better. I don't know how much I'm going to play, but I'm taking it as a year to get my strength up, get fundamentals down, things like that. In the future, in the next couple years, I'll be hoping to play more.
You have a pretty good player to learn from in Austin Rei. What can you pick up from a player like him?
I like his mental approach to the game a lot. He has this quiet confidence to where he knows he is successful at what he does, and at the same time he knows when he needs to work and try to get better. So he's always working hard to get better, but he always knows he's good. So he has this confidence where he knows where he's at, but he knows he can get better. That he's going to play at the best of my ability every single day.
What is your favorite part about being a Husky?
I love being able to come out to this beautiful park every single day and enjoy what I do, have fun with the game I love.
