NANEA, Hawai'i – No. 6 Washington completed one of the most impressive days in school history, taking a sizeable lead at the Pac-12 Preview at Nanea Golf Course on the Big Island of Hawai'i. The Dawgs finished 36 holes at 9-under 575 to take an eight shot lead over one of the best fields college golf will see all year.
“It was a good day all around,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “This is the best field we will see until conference so it was great to see us play so well compared to the competition. The team just stayed in the moment all day and even when the wind picked up didn't let anything get to us.”
The Dawgs got off to a hot start with a round of 10-under 282 in the morning. Washington built a six shot lead on No. 7 UCLA and would only increase that in the afternoon. Winds picked up for some of the second round, causing higher scores, but nothing that would bother the Huskies who for a second turn had the low round on the course. Washington shot 1-over 293 to take an eight shot lead on the Bruins, but even more impressive no other team is closer than 19 strokes.
“The 10-under in the morning was really impressive,” said Mulflur. “You'll take that any time.”
Anytime because that was the low score to par of any round in Washington women's golf history.
No. 3 Stanford is third at 10-over, followed by No. 13 Arizona at 11-over, Washington State at 12-over and No. 2 USC at 13-over.
After such a dominant day, it is no surprise that several Huskies are near the individual lead. Four Huskies are inside the top-10 with one round left, led by SooBin Kim who is at 6-under for the championship. Kim fired a 5-under 68 in the morning, followed by a 1-under 72 in the afternoon and is just three shots back of Alison Lee of UCLA who leads at 9-under.
Kim made eight birdies and just four bogeys on the day and also holed out from the fairway on the par-four first in the morning. She is four clear of third place, which is teammate Charlotte Thomas at 2-under.
Thomas was steady all day with a 2-under 71 in the morning, followed by an even-par 73 in the breezier afternoon round. She made just three bogeys all day for solo third, seven shots back of the leader.
Jing Yan and Eimi Koga are also inside the top-10 with Yan tied for fourth at 4-under and Koga tied for ninth at even-par. The freshman Yan shot a bogey-free 2-under in the morning and backed that up with 1-over 74 to get to 1-under for the tournament. Koga is at even-par, playing in her home state. She went 1-under 72 and followed that up with a 1-over 74 to join three of her teammates in the top-10.
The final Husky was Cyd Okino, also playing in her home state. She shot rounds of 76 and 78 and is tied for 38th at 8-over.
The Dawgs will go for the win on Tuesday as they complete their fall season. Washington will look to navigate the final 18 holes with hope of bringing the trophy back across the Pacific.
“Just more of the same tomorrow,” said Mulflur. “We can't play defense so we just need to continue to be patient and control what we can control.”
