Schoening Named MVP, Dawgs Win 3-1

SEATTLE - Junior Stine Schoening (Woodinville Wash.) was named the Husky/Nike Invitational Defensive MVP as the Huskies went 2-0 on the weekend and improved to 5-0 on the season with a 3-1 victory over Fresno State.
Washington and Portland each went 2-0 in the tournament but because of goal differential the Pilots were named tournament champions. Amanda Frisbie was named the Offensive MVP for Portland.
"It was an ok game," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "Obviously I'm happy with the result. There are some things we weren't as intelligent about as I would like and we put ourselves behind the eight-ball a little bit. We created plenty of chances the first half didn't give ourselves a cushion."
Another early goal by junior Lindsay Elston (Sammamish, Wash.) in the 22nd minute pushed the Huskies to an early 1-0 lead. Elston, who scored her fourth goal on the season, took the Bulldog keeper, Katie Devault, one-on-one for the score.
Fresno State evened the match in the 69th minute as Callie Hancock took a pass from Lauren Lindstrom to drive the ball past a diving Megan Kufeld in goal for UW.
Redshirt freshman Kufeld (Fremont, Calif.) made her second appearance in goal for the Huskies and first start and complete game. She made two saves.
"In the second game on the weekend when its only 1-0 and one goal puts them back in it, I think some of our game thinking went away a little bit so I'd like to see us improve that. When we let them get back in with a goal late in the second half, you have to be happy as a coach when your team responds with two goals quickly. There are lessons to learn in every game. I'm going to be able to extract a lot of lessons early in the season from this one that we can move forward with."
Elston was also a part of the game-winning goal, floating a nice ball in the air from the right side of the field, just in front of the goal to junior Hillary Zevenbergen (Woodway, Wash.) who headed it in for her second goal of the season in the 73rd minute.
Just a minute later, a loose ball in the box snuck into the net for the third and final Husky goal of the game. It was credited an own goal to Fresno State as it was knocked in off of a defender.
Several freshmen made their Husky debuts in the game, including McKenzie Karas, Charlee Garcia and Tessa Vollrath. Senior Kelsea Brajkovich made her season debut after suffering an injury earlier in the season.
Zevenbergen and Elston led the team with four shots each. UW outshot Fresno State 15-10. Junior Allie Beahan had three shots for the Huskies and Jaclyn Softli took two off of the bench, respectively.
The Huskies will head to Gonzaga on Friday for a 4 p.m. match before hosting Notre Dame on Sunday at noon.
