Strong Final Round Helps UW Finish 5th At Half Moon Bay

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. - The Husky women's golf team combined to shoot 2-under 286 in Tuesday's final round of the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate to end up fifth out of 15 teams in the final tune up before the Pac-12 Championships.

The team race was seemingly decided on Monday when No. 1 ranked UCLA jumped out to a 14-stroke lead over third-ranked USC. But the Trojans rallied furiously over the final 18 holes before falling short, ultimately losing by six strokes to their cross-town rivals.

Stanford entered the final round tied with the Huskies for fourth. They shot 5-under 283 to separate from UW and ended up third.

Arizona was fourth, thanks to an 8-under 280 on Tuesday.

No. 29 Washington was able to finish ahead of four schools ranked higher than them, including No. 14 California, who they beat by one shot.

"I thought we got our swag back," said Husky Coach Mary Lou Mulflur. Her Huskies had finished tied for 14th and 10th in their last two tournaments.

"I feel we got back on track a little bit," she continued. "We just need to clean up a few short game things and then I think we will be good to go."

Washington was led by freshman Jennifer Yang, who recorded the best round of the tournament by a Husky with a 3-under 69. The Canadian had four birdies and just one bogey during her round. She ended up tied for 22nd overall with a 219 (+3).

Senior Sadena Parks also was under par for the day, firing a 70 at the par-72 Ocean Course at Half Moon Bay Golf Link. Parks tied SooBin Kim as the Huskies' top finisher. Both ended up +2 at 218.

Kim shot even-par golf in the final round. The freshman's 72 featured a nice comeback after bogeys on three of the first five holes.

Freshman Cyd Okino wrapped up a nice tournament by shooting 3-over 75. Her consistency allowed her to finish tied for 28th in the 75 person field.

Three bad holes cost sophomore Kelli Bowers on Tuesday. She double bogeyed holes 5 and 7 and bogeyed No. 4 and ended up with a 77. She finished tied for 45th at +8 for the tournament.

Freshman Erynne Lee of UCLA cruised to a three shot win. The native of Silverdale, Wash. ended up at -9, ahead of USC's Lisa McCloskey.

Up next for the Huskies is the Pac-12 Championships, April 27-29 at Pullman's Palouse Ridge. The Huskies won the Cougar Cup at the same course to open their season back in September.

"This was a good tune up for us," said Mulflur. "The golf course is similar to Palouse Ridge, so it really helped us in that way."
