PING-ASU Invitational Results
TEMPE, Ariz. - Tricky winds wreaked havoc on the competitors, including the Husky women who ended up tied for 14th out of 17 teams at the PING/ASU Invitational, which wrapped up on Sunday.
Just two golfers out of 90 shot under par at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe during the final round. No teams shot under par and four squads in the field, which was laced with seven top-15 programs, managed to tally less than double-digit over par combined scores.
Washington shot 312 (+28) in the final round and ended up +54 after 54 holes. They tied New Mexico for 14th.
"It was really windy and for some reason we just couldn't handle it," UW Coach Mary Lou Mulflur said about how her team handled the conditions. "We ended up making big numbers and club selection was tough ... it just made a bad combination for us."
Top-ranked UCLA won the team title by 12 shots. They were +5 for the weekend to finish well ahead of host Arizona State, who ended up +17.
Sadena Parks led the Husky individual efforts. She tied for 24th and was +8 overall after shooting 221 for the weekend.
Parks, competing for just the second time during the spring, was not immune to the windy conditions on Sunday and shot 77 (+6) on the 6,121-yard, par-71 course. She settled the ship after a rough first nine saw her go +6. On the second nine, Parks managed to mix in two birdies with two bogeys and shoot even-par golf.
Freshman SooBin Kim awoke from a mini-slump and shot a team-best 1-over 72 in Sunday's final round. After rounds of 75 and 78 that saw her notch a combined two birdies, Kim was able to accompany three birdies with four bogeys during the final round.
Kim ended up tied for 41st at +12 for the tournament.
The Huskies other three golfers all shot rounds in the 80s on Sunday.
Jennifer Yang shot 10-over 81 and ended tied for 51st at +14. Kelli Bowers shot 82 and tied for 75th at +21. Brittany Tallman shot 83 and ended up +27.
The Huskies have one more tournament before the Pac-12 Championships in Pullman at the end of April. UW will travel to Half Moon Bay in San Francisco for a two-day tournament from April 16-17.
