Cal Scores Twice In Seventh To Take Game One

Berkeley, Calif. - The No. 3/3 Huskies needed just one more out in the bottom of the seventh to hand No. 1/1 Cal its second loss of the season, but the Golden Bears rallied and with the bases loaded, hit a single to left, scoring the winning run from second, 2-1. The Huskies are now 32-2 overall and 3-1 in Pac-12 play while Cal is 31-1 and 4-0.
UW had nine hits in the game, two each by sophomores Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) and Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.), senior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) and junior Jerrin Fa'asua (Oceanside, Calif.). Freshman Kimberlee Souza (Waialua, Hawai'i) had the ninth Husky hit.
"We held our approach well offensively and got runners on base but we need to do a better job scoring those runners and get two-out base hits to extend the inning," said Hayward. "We had a lot of people put the ball in play hard and we look to keep doing that for the rest of the weekend."
Inglesby drops to 16-1 in the circle. She pitched a no-hitter through 3.1 innings but allowed three in the seventh as Cal rallied back. She had four strikeouts in the game.
Both teams left several runners on base and in scoring position in the game, mostly by hits from UW and walks to the Golden Bears.
The Husky defense made some huge plays in the game to get out of some tough situations.
Inglesby walked the first two batters of the second and a groundout advanced the runners. Inglesby got Jolene Henderson to pop out in foul territory to Hayward in right for the second out. Frani Echavarria grounded out to sophomore Hooch Fagaly (Chino, Calif.) to end what started as a scary inning for the Huskies. Cal would leave runners on second and third.
With one out in the third, Hayward reached on a base hit and Pohlman would follow with a bloop single to left. With two outs, there was a double steal by Hayward and Pohlman. Inglesby singled to left as Hayward scored from third but Pohlman was thrown out at home by the center fielder for the third out. UW took the 1-0 lead.
Cal threatened again in the fourth after Henderson had the first hit off of Inglesby on the day. With the bases loaded, Inglesby fielded the ball and threw home for the force out. A ground out ended the inning.
Souza led off the fifth with a single to right and Hayward would get a bunt single, but UW would leave two on in the fifth inning.
With one out in the fifth, Inglesby intentionally walked Valerie Ariota for the second time in the game and UW got a double play to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cal rallied back with one out as Echavarria doubled to center. Jamia Reid singled to put runners on the corners and then stole second. After a pop up in the infield, Ariota was intentionally walked for the third time to load the bases for Jace Williams. Williams hit a single to left, driving in two runs to win the game.
Henderson was the winning pitcher for Cal, improving to 17-1. She allowed just one run, unearned, and had nine strikeouts.
