McMorrow Clutch In 4-3 Win Over Cal Poly

MALIBU, Calif. - Locked in a 3-3 tie, the final point for the 17th-ranked Husky men's tennis team came down to the No. 1 court and a battle of two Top-25 singles players. It was Washington's Kyle McMorrow that came out on top, edging Cal Poly's 25th-ranked Andre Dome, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5, to give UW the win over the Mustangs at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Played at a neutral site on Pepperdine's home courts, the Huskies (12-3) stopped a hot Cal Poly team that had won 10 of its last 11 matches. UW wrapped up its non-conference matches with the win today and will start Pac-12 play next week hosting the L.A. schools.
McMorrow, whose No. 17 individual ranking matches the UW team, had one of his best wins of the season today and his fifth over a Top-25 opponent to clinch.
"Dome is a talented guy and hit shots all over the court," said Head Coach Matt Anger. "Kyle broke at 5-6 to seal the match. It was just really impressive because he hadn't been feeling great and played hard. They both were coming up with shots, it was pretty good tennis. I love having Kyle out there for us with things on the line, that's for sure."
The Huskies lost the doubles point but bounced back quickly with the first three wins in singles to take a 3-1 lead. Freshman Emmett Egger rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Brian McPhee at No. 2 singles, and junior Marton Bots scored a big 6-2, 6-2 win over Matt Fawcett at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Max Manthou returned to the lineup after sitting out Wednesday and he resumed his winning ways with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Marco Comuzzo at fifth singles.
Still, Cal Poly had taken the first sets on the other three courts, so UW would need at least one comeback to get the win. McMorrow wound up providing that. The Mustangs got a 7-6, 6-4 win from Jordan Bridge over freshman Viktor Farkas at fourth singles, and redshirt freshman Nicholas Kamisar came up short, 6-4, 6-2, at sixth singles to Jurgen De Jager.
Washington will next face the nation's No. 1 team and defending NCAA Champion USC in Seattle on Friday, March 30, at 1:30 p.m.
