MALIBU, Calif. - Washington men's tennis had its seven-match win streak snapped today at eighth-ranked Pepperdine, as UW fell in four third sets in singles in a 7-0 setback at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The 17th-ranked Huskies (11-3) put themselves in a good spot early in singles against a veteran Waves squad, but were unable to close things out.
Washington played without sophomore Max Manthou in singles and doubles, who has an 11-1 dual singles record. Freshman Jeff Hawke stepped into the No. 6 singles spot in his absence and nearly pulled off a big win, but Pepperdine's David Sofaer held on in a third set tiebreak, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2).
Junior Kyle McMorrow, junior Marton Bots, and freshman Viktor Farkas all won their first sets in singles, but Pepperdine rallied on all courts. McMorrow-ranked 17th, was going against 11th-ranked Sebastian Fanselow at No. 1 singles. McMorrow took the first set, 7-5, but Fanselow took the last two games in the second set to win that one, 6-3, and then took an early break in the third to get another 6-3 set win to take the match.
Bots was up a set on Alex Llompart at third singles, but things swung back to Llompart who completed a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory. Farkas faced 76th-ranked Mousheg Hovhannisyan at fourth singles and rolled to a 6-2 win in the first set, but the next two sets went Pepperdine's way, 6-4, 6-4.
Freshman Emmett Egger took on a Top-20 opponent at second singles in 19th-ranked Finn Tearney. After Tearney notched a 6-1 first set win, Egger stepped up and forced the second set into a tiebreak, but Tearney ended things with a 7-3 win in the breaker. Redshirt freshman Nicholas Kamisar also had just his second dual loss of the year, as he moved up to No. 5 singles but lost, 7-5, 6-1 to Hugh Clarke.
Pepperdine (11-6) took the doubles point in a sweep to gain the early 1-0 lead. McMorrow and Egger faced No. 3-ranked Tearney and Llompart at No. 1 doubles and dropped an 8-4 match.
The Huskies will finish up their non-conference slate this Friday when they take on 52nd-ranked Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.
