Huskies Tripped Up In Boise By Broncos

BOISE, Idaho - The margin for error on the road against a ranked opponent is often razor thin, and the 26th-ranked Husky men's tennis team found itself on the wrong side of a few too many tiebreaks today, as No. 50 Boise State notched a 4-3 win over the Dawgs at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club today. The Broncos (4-1) took the doubles point in a tiebreak and the Huskies (4-2) then won just one of four tiebreaks in singles play.
Doubles play would end up being decisive, and Boise State grabbed the point, two matches to one, as the No. 3 doubles match went to a tiebreaker, with Garrett Patton and Fillipp Pogostkin edging senior Matt Stith and junior Marton Bots, 9-8 and 8-6 in the breaker. Kyle McMorrow and Emmett Egger were 8-5 winners at No. 1 doubles over James Meredith and Nathan Sereke, but Sears and Bettles of BSU won over freshman Jeff Hawke and sophomore Max Manthou by the same score at No. 2 doubles.
15th-ranked McMorrow got UW back even quickly, prevailing in a No. 1 singles battle of Top-40 players. McMorrow rose to the road challenge, beating 31st-ranked Meredith, 6-3, 6-2 to make it 1-1.
Redshirt freshman Nicholas Kamisar moved up to No. 5 singles to face Nathan Sereke. Kamisar lost the first set, 6-3, and was on the verge of reversing the momentum and forcing a third set, but Sereke held on in the second set tiebreaker, winning 7-6 (7-5).
Washington answered as Bots rallied from a rough first set to take down Scott Sears at No. 3 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 which made it 2-2. But freshman Viktor Farkas was then edged in consecutive tiebreakers by Patton at fourth singles, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5), as the see-saw swung back in the Broncos favor.
Boise State clinched the win at the No. 2 spot, as freshman Emmett Egger did well to force a third set but Andrew Bettles came through for the home crowd, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to give the Broncos the insurmountable 4-2 lead. Sophomore Max Manthou did give the Dawgs the last tally, however, staging a comeback at sixth singles with the one tiebreak win of the day as he beat Pogostkin at No. 6 singles, 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3.
The Huskies will have a big chance to bounce right back next weekend when 31st-ranked Michigan comes to town on Saturday, Feb. 11
