Farkas Helps Huskies Fight Off Ducks

EUGENE, Ore. - Faced with a hostile road environment with the match on his racquet, freshman Viktor Farkas spoiled the hopes of the home team and led the Husky men's tennis team to the 4-3 win over Oregon at UO's Student Tennis Center. The Dawgs (7-2) had three straight-set singles wins, but needed Farkas to rally from a set down to hand Oregon (8-1) its first loss of the season.
At 3-all, Farkas, a native of Bratislava, Slovakia, won a critical second set tiebreak, then pulled away late in the third set for a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory at the No. 4 singles spot over Daniel Sardu.
Washington had fallen behind after losing the doubles point, but then won five of the six first sets in singles, with only Farkas falling behind. Redshirt freshman Nicholas Kamisar rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sho Higuchi at No. 6 singles. Ninth-ranked junior Kyle McMorrow then wrapped up an impressive 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over 122nd-ranked Alex Rovello.
Sophomore Max Manthou put UW one win away with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jose Izquierdo at No. 5 singles. But the Ducks then rallied. Jeff Mullen upended freshman Emmett Egger at second singles, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, and junior Marton Bots suffered his first dual loss of the year, falling to Robin Cambier, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
The win does not count towards the Pac-12 standings, as the Huskies and Ducks will meet again later this season in Seattle. Washington extended its win streak over Oregon to 16 matches.
The Huskies will be back in action tomorrow on Oregon's courts against UC Irvine, with first serve at 2 p.m.
