EUGENE, Ore. - The Husky men's tennis team wrapped its weekend in Oregon with a second victory in as many days, as UW notched a 5-2 win over 54th-ranked UC Irvine today at Oregon's Student Tennis Center. The 27th-ranked Huskies swept doubles and won the first four singles matches before the Anteaters picked up the final two points.
The Huskies (8-2) dropped the doubles point yesterday in a hard-fought 4-3 win over the Ducks, but today they got out ahead. Jeff Hawke and Max Manthou were 8-4 winners at second doubles, then Kyle McMorrow and Emmett Egger clinched the point with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. Matt Stith and Marton Bots then finished an 8-4 third doubles win.
In singles, Manthou put the Huskies up 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Ryan Cheung at fifth singles. Redshirt freshman Nicholas Kamisar stepped up with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Shuhei Shibahara at sixth singles, and junior Marton Bots provided the clinching point, beating Jacob Jung, 7-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
Freshman Emmett Egger was a winner at second singles, stopping Sam Gould, 6-2, 6-4. That made it 5-0 Washington. UC Irvine then pulled out a couple three setters. Freshman Viktor Farkas, who was the hero Friday as he clinched the 4-3 win over Oregon, today ran out of gas, losing 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 to Jon Kazarian in the four spot. Lastly, the No. 1 singles match saw ninth-ranked Kyle McMorrow upset by the smallest of margins. Fabian Matthews edged McMorrow, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6). The Top-10 ranking makes McMorrow a big target, and in a match where the Huskies had already clinched the win, Matthews was able to play with nothing to lose.
"I felt bad for Kyle," said Head Coach Matt Anger. "He played hard. His opponent played incredibly loose on big points and came up with some great shots. But Kyle's doing a great job and really progressing. We are in a lot of ways getting tougher. It was a very good weekend for Max and Nick. They're making it tough on teams."
UW returns home for a big test next Friday, March 2, as the Huskies will host 19th-ranked Tulsa at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
