SEATTLE - Freshman Falon Miller made her first career start for Lesle Gallimore's Huskies and tied the game with her second goal of 2012 in the 46th minute as Washington and Arizona tied 1-1 in Seattle on Friday afternoon.
Utah scored its goal very early in just the seventh minute. Jessica Culver scored her first goal of the season. A corner by Ana-Maria Montoya went long and a long pass back into the box was headed in by Culver.
Miller (Las Vegas, Nev.) received a nice pass from junior Lindsay Elston (Sammamish, Wash.) and struck it hard about six yards out into the back right of the net.
The Huskies (8-3-2, 1-2-1) held possession for most of the first half and bombarded the Arizona (5-5-3, 1-1-2) goal with shots, outshooting the Wildcats in each period and 20-6 overall in the match.
"We were super conservative in the first half," said Gallimore. "We didn't get out to defend the ball on the shot they took and scored. Kari made a great save, gave up a corner and they made a great play and Igive credit to them. I thought we held possession the first half, played well enough but were too conservative. We weren't generating enough shots or opportunities on goal."
Miller and Elston took six shots each and a combined seven of those were on goal. Arizona goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman made six saves in the game and came off of her line to grab or kick out several balls to end some good Husky runs on goal.
"We came out fired up the second half, got an early goal and kept pressing them," Gallimore added. "Clearly by the shot count we created enough in the attack to score a second goal. Their keeper made a couple of saves but a lot of things were right at her and off frame so out of those 20 shots not many were directly on frame where we needed them to be."
Senior goalkeeper Kari Davidson (Portland, Ore.) made some great diving saves for the Huskies, two total in the game.
Washington will host Arizona State on Sunday at noon.
