DURHAM, N.C. - Washington had its season-opening four match winning streak ended today on the road at 10th-ranked Duke, as the Blue Devils earned a 4-0 win at its Sheffield Tennis Center. The match was the final qualifying match for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, with Duke now advancing to the round of 16.
The Huskies (4-1) fell behind 1-0 after doubles play, with Duke posting an 8-2 win at the No. 3 spot and then Jeff Hawke and Max Manthou fell just short for the first time this season, dropping an 8-6 decision at second doubles to Mengel and Holland that clinched the point.
Duke boasts a pair of top-20 players atop its singles lineup. Washington counters with its own top-20 standout in junior Kyle McMorrow, but McMorrow was unable to upset seventh-ranked Henrique Cunha, falling 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Emmett Egger was defeated at No. 2 singles by 17th-ranked Chris Mengel, 6-4, 6-2.
The match was stopped after 110th-ranked Fred Saba stopped the comeback attempt of Husky frosh Viktor Farkas, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 4 singles. Junior Marton Bots and sophomore Max Manthou were both trailing in their singles matches as well, though redshirt freshman Nicholas Kamisar was up a set and leading in the second set at No. 6 singles.
The young Huskies still gained a lot of knowledge and experience this weekend, grinding out an impressive win over 30th-ranked Louisville yesterday and now facing a top-10 team on the road. They will have another tough road dual on hand next Saturday, Feb. 4, when they visit 48th-ranked Boise State.
