Huskies Sweep Past Tigers, Get Set For The Road

SEATTLE - Washington wrapped up a successful weekend with another sweep at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, handling Pacific by a 7-0 count. The 26th-ranked Huskies (3-0) won the doubles point in a final tiebreak and then rolled to straight set singles wins in five of six matches.
For the young Huskies, "everything is a test for us, no doubt," said head coach Matt Anger. "I thought we were okay today. One thing I would say is we had a couple of lapses. When we're playing against the guys we're going to be playing next weekend and after, we need to cut down or eliminate the lapses in concentration."
With the 1-0 lead after doubles play, redshirt freshman Nicholas Kamisar of Sammamish extended the lead to 2-0 with a quick 6-2, 6-0 win over Alex Hamilton at No. 6 singles. 15th-ranked junior Kyle McMorrow then completed a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ivan Castro in the top singles match.
For the third time in UW's three wins, junior Marton Bots (Budapest, Hungary) put the clinching fourth point on the board. Today he overcame Alex Golding at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2, to give UW the insurmountable 4-0 lead.
From there the Huskies had to fight to complete the sweep. Issaquah native Emmett Egger needed a service break in the last game to wrap up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Tomasz Krzyszkowski at second singles. Fellow freshman Viktor Farkas lost the first seven games of his match, but then won 12 of the next 15 en route to a 0-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Erik Cederwall. The last match was at fourth singles, where sophomore Max Manthou (Tacoma, Wash.) trailed 2-6 in the second set tiebreaker, but saved all four set points to beat Ben Mirkin, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7).
The doubles point turned into a marathon but the Huskies were able to outlast the Tigers thanks to a big comeback from Bots and Farkas at the third spot. The two trailed 5-1 against Krzyszkowski and Mirkin, but won four straight to tie it up at 5-5. With the doubles point tied at a win apiece, the match went to a tiebreak, with Farkas and Bots taking four of the final five points to win, 7-4.
Earlier in doubles, Manthou and freshman Jeff Hawke rolled to an 8-3 win at second doubles over Golding and Cederwall. At the top spot, McMorrow and Egger had a 7-4 lead and served for the match at 7-5, but they were broken. They then had three match points in the next game but Pacific held and then won in a tiebreaker, 7-5.
Washington will travel to Durham, North Carolina and play at the home of the Duke Blue Devils next week, as part of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship qualifying rounds. The Huskies play 30th-ranked Lousville in the first match on Jan. 28, then they will play either Duke or VCU.
