Newcomers Lead 7-0 Win Over Seattle In Opener

SEATTLE - A number of Huskies got their first dual match experience, and first dual match victories, as the Washington men's tennis team opened the 2012 season with a 7-0 win over Seattle U. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center this evening. The 26th-ranked Huskies (1-0) had three players make their first starts in singles, and one more in doubles, including freshman Emmett Egger manning the No. 1 singles spot.
"It's been since May since we were out on the court as a team so it's a lot of fun," said Head Coach Matt Anger, now in his 18th season at Washington. "I enjoy everything we do day in, day out through the process, but the matches are the main reason we do it."
UW's top returner, 15th-ranked Kyle McMorrow, sat out today's match due to the number of matches he played in the fall. He will be clear from here on. So Egger stepped onto court one in his first dual match and did not look bothered at all. The Issaquah native handled Mark Shkrebtan, 6-1, 6-1, in the fastest match of the evening.
"Emmett has been playing all-court tennis every day, and that makes it tough for guys to play against him," said Anger. "Even if guys can do one thing well, he can focus on another. He has a fighting chance every time out."
He added, "What was great was we had four freshmen that got their first collegiate team experience tonight, and all looked good. They're going to be good Huskies and I'm really happy for them."
Another of those newcomers, Viktor Farkas of Slovakia, was victorious in his first career college match. Farkas just joined the Huskies at the start of winter quarter, so he's only had a couple weeks of practice, but he showed his potential with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Flavio Malagutti at No. 5 singles.
The clinching point came from junior Marton Bots, who played second singles against Andrew Anderson and won eight straight games from the middle of the first set on for a 6-3, 6-0 win. Another Husky making his dual match debut was Nicholas Kamisar, a redshirt freshman from Sammamish, who posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kevin Lynch at fourth singles.
Sophomore Max Manthou from Tacoma made it 6-0 Dawgs with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot. Senior Skyler Tateishi then got his first dual match start in two years, and after falling behind 0-3 in the second set, he rallied to finish off a 6-4, 7-5 win over Jason Bediones to complete the Husky sweep.
The Huskies took big leads early on the doubles courts and rolled to a sweep. Bots and Egger teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles over Shkrebtan and Meske. Freshman Jeff Hawke got his first start in doubles, teaming with Manthou, and scored an 8-2 victory over Lynch and Bediones. Senior Matt Stith then teamed with Farkas at the third spot and grabbed an 8-4 win over Pluckett and Malagutti.
Washington will have a quick jump up in difficulty level next week as a solid 57th-ranked Idaho team comes in next Friday, Jan. 20, at 5 p.m.
