Mixed Bag For UW On Day One Of Pac-10s

OJAI, Calif. - After first round victories seeded Huskies Kyle McMorrow and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan were both upended in the round of 16 today on day one of the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Championships at Libbey Park. A pair of Huskies made the quarterfinals of the invitational draw, and UW's top players will look to rally in doubles play.
In the first round this morning, McMorrow, the No. 3 seed, fended off USC's Peter Lucassen, 7-5, 6-4. Nedunchezhiyan had a tough opener, slowly turning the momentum against Cal's Riki McLachlan to take a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory. In the round of 16, McMorrow lost a marathon to Cal's Nick Andrews, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-5, while Nedunchezhiyan dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision to USC's Emilio Gomez.
Senior Martin Kildahl dropped a first round encounter with Oregon's Robin Cambier, 7-6 (6), 6-3. Senior Tobi Obenaus had a tough draw in Stanford's Alex Clayton, and lost 6-2, 6-3, while sophomore Marton Bots couldn't get past Adrien Puget of UCLA, falling 6-4, 6-1.
In the invitational draw, freshman Max Manthou got past Cal's Tommie Murphy, 6-3, 6-2. Later in the day, junior Matt Stith outlasted Oregon's Sho Higuchi, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 6-3. The two will have their quarterfinal matches on Friday.
Friday will also bring the start of doubles play, with McMorrow and Nedunchezhiyan teaming in the main draw as well as Obenaus and Kildahl.
