UW Hopes April Showers Will Bring May Advantages

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Senior captain Karinn Dickinson ended 36 holes of golf tied for 12th among individuals to lead the Husky women's golf team's effort in Monday's first and second round of the Arizona Wildcat Invitational. UW was 8th out of 16 squads competing, with eight teams still out on the course before darkness set in at Vistoso Golf Club - the par-72 home course of the University of Arizona.

Dickinson fired a 2-under 70 in the morning round, but struggled in the afternoon round and shot a +3 (75). When darkness fell, Dickinson's +1 (145) put her six shots behind two golfers in the clubhouse (Cal's Joanne Lee and Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro) and two golfers still on the course (Arizona's Isabelle Boineau and Haley Andreas), who were all at -5.

Arizona ended the day atop the leaderboard at -5 overall, with California nipping at the Wildcats' heels at -3. Both teams were still on the course when the sun set.

Washington was +25 for the day.

"We figured out of that 25 (strokes), we had to count 23 doubles and triples," said Coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "So we're right there. It's just minimizing those mistakes. Sometimes you just have to take your medicine and take your bogeys. Once we do that, we're going to be fine."

"There were a lot of positives today and we had some stretches where we were playing really well," Mulflur said.

Dickinson had five birdies and three bogeys in the morning round under pristine conditions to shoot her 70. Her next 18 holes got off to a great start with a birdie on her opening hole - the par-4, fifth hole. But, in two of the next three holes, the senior from Mulkiteo had double bogeys. She would go on for a pair of birdies and bogeys to end up at 75.

Freshman Kelli Bowers is the next highest Husky on the leaderboard, tied for 23rd at +4 overall. The youngster from Chelan shot a 4-over 76 in the morning, but bounced back nicely with an even-par 72 in the afternoon.

"Kelli had an opportunity to take it deep and shoot a 67 or 68 without breaking a sweat," said Mulflur about Bowers, one of two freshmen in her lineup. "Again, it's learning how to eliminate double bogeys. The good news is that, its doable."

A Ram Choi shot a pair of 78's and is tied for 56th at +12. Sadena Parks went 81 and 76 (+13) to end the day in 58th, while sophomore Brittany Tallman shot 76 and 83 to end at +15

Golfers still attempting to complete their second round will begin at 7:45 a.m. tomorrow, followed by the final round of the 54-hole tournament.
