WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i -- Welcome home Tze Huang Choo.
After spending the fall toiling as an amateur golfer in his native Asia's tour, Choo returned to the University of Washington to wrap up his collegiate career. On Thursday, Matt Thurmond and his Husky teammates were especially happy to have him back on the squad.
The senior from Singapore led the Dawgs' charge in the second round of the Ameri Ari Invitational at Waikoloa Kings' Course by firing a 4-under 68. Choo blazed out of the gates with birdies on his first four holes and shot even par the rest of the way. He entered the clubhouse at -1 overall (143) and tied for 38th.
"I'm really proud of Choo," said Thurmond of his lone bogey-free golfer. "He started off with four birdies and had to take an unplayable lie on the next hole and still ended up with par. It was a great start for him ... we need more of those from him and I know he has it in him."
The Huskies needed every bit of Choo's score as the team shot a combined 3-under 285 and are tied for 12th out of 20 teams at the three round tournament on Hawai'i's Big Island. The Dawgs were even after Wednesday's first round.
"Any time you have to count high scores it really hurts you. We need to find a way to get four good scores in there tomorrow," said Thurmond.
Chris Williams proved again to be Mr. Steady for the Huskies as he turned in his second consecutive under-par round. The Moscow, Idaho native shot a 2-under 70 and is -5 overall for the tournament. He is tied for 14th, eight strokes off the lead.
Oregon's Daniel Miernicki is -13 overall and has a two stroke lead over Oklahoma State's Kevin Tway.
Oklahoma State leads the team competition and is 25-under overall.
Charlie Hughes shot his second-consecutive even-par 72 round and is tied for 49th.
Ty Chambers was 3-over for the day and is 3-over for the tournament. He is tied for 73rd.
Kevin Spooner shot a 6-over 78 and is 9-over for the tournament and is 104th on the leaderboard.
The Huskies and the rest of the field will start teeing off for the final round at 7:30 a.m. in shotgun format.
