WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- The Husky men were 11th out of 15 teams competing at the USC Intercollegiate before darkness forced the field off the course prematurely on Monday night.
Golfers were scheduled to play 36 holes today at the 6,869-yard North Ranch CC, but a two hour frost delay and rounds that hovered in the five-hour range left teams well-short of finishing.
San Diego State and UCLA are tied atop the leaderboard at -6 overall.
No. 24 Washington was well behind the leaders at +16 when play was halted. They combined for a 290 (+10) in the first round and were +6 in the afternoon with golfers having between six to eight holes left to play.
"For most of the day, the course was very scorable," said Husky coach Matt Thurmond. "I'm really disappointed with the scores overall. We just didn't get the job done today."
One player that did impress Thurmond was sophomore Chris Williams. He is tied for 8th at -1 and is even par through the first 10 holes of the second round after carding a 1-under 70 in the morning.
"Chris played great. I'm most happy that when it got cold, started getting dark and everyone was getting tired...it was real challenging and he played the last six holes at 1-under par," said Thurmond.
"If he goes on to have an great day tomorrow and finsh well, he'll look back at those last six hole as a turning point."
Charlie Hughes is the next highest Husky on the leaderboard and is tied for 30th at +3.
Freshmen Trevor Simsby and Cory McElyea are tied for 54th at +7. Junior Ty Chambers is +11.
Another frost delay is expected at the Westlake Village golf course where temperatures are again expected to be in the mid-30's during the early morning. Seconrd round play should resume at around 9:00 a.m., followed the final round in the afternoon.
