STANFORD - After Saturday's first round of the Peg Barnard Invitational was halted due to poor playing conditions, the rain let up long enough at Stanford Golf Course on Sunday for the competitors to complete the 36-hole tournament.
When all was settled, Husky senior Anya Alvarez had a top-five finish and the Husky team was fifth out of 10 squads competing. The team wrapped up Saturday's first round at 315 (+20) and combined for a 295 (+11) in the afternoon to finish at +42.
The driving force behind the Huskies on Sunday was Alvarez, who shot a bogey-free, 4-under 67. Her score equaled the lowest round at the 6,148-yard, par-71 course and she was just one of four golfers to go under par during the entire tourney.
"Anya's bogey free round...that's very hard to come by in this game and on this course," said Husky Coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "She had four solid birdies and it was good to see her playing like her old self. We need her to be a leader on this team and she's very capable of that."
Alvarez's first round 78 (+7) cost her a shot at medalist honors, but she ended up with a 145 (+3), two strokes behind second-place finisher Daniela Holmqvist of Cal and five-shots behind winner Emily Childs of Cal.
Alvarez wasn't the only Husky that had a top-10 finish. Joining her at the top of the leaderboard was Sadena Parks, who tied for eighth. Parks shot an even-par 71 in the afternoon, but like Alvarez shot a 78 in the morning. She ended up +7 overall.
Freshman A Ram Choi joined Alvarez as one of four golfers to claim under par rounds . Competing as an individual, she shot a 1-under 70 to finish 16th among all competitors at +9.
Kelli Bowers and Katie Saucier each were +13 (155) and tied for 28th. Saucier was competing as an individual.
Nicole Ferrero was +17 to tie for 38th, while Karinn Dickinson was +20 and Brittany Tallman was +24.
Overall, Mulflur was pleased with her team's overall effort, especially the afternoon round.
"(Most of her players) played well and bounced back. The first day was pretty tough with the rain and everything. It was continuous play so they didn't have time to stop and regroup, but they did a nice job of re-focusing themselves between rounds," said Mulflur.
