SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Senior Anya Alvarez is fifth among individuals and Washington is 7th in the team standings after 36 holes of the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational.
The Husky fivesome shot rounds of 312 (+24) and 308 (+20) to end the day at 44-over. California leads the team race at +12.
"We're all very frustrated," said Coach Mary Lou Mulflur about her team being 32 strokes off the lead. "We just can't seem to get over that hump. We've learned a lot but we have to perform with what we have learned. That's kind of where we're at right now."
"At some point we have to strap on our boots and get back up there and do what we're capable of doing. We certainly show glimpses of that, we just can't seem to piece it all together."
Mulflur is pleased with her senior Alvarez. Alvarez shot a 73 and 76 to enter the clubhouse at +5 overall at the 6,121-yard, par-72 Almaden Golf and Country Club. She is six strokes behind Cal's Emily Childs, the only golfer that was under par at 1-under 143.
"She is certainly capable of winning a collegiate golf tournament," said Mulflur. "She had a couple of costly little mistakes today but overall she has been playing pretty well and it's good to have her back in the lineup."
"She feels good about a couple of things and that bodes well for the rest of the spring."
Alvarez had five combined birdies in two rounds and could have left the golf course in even better shape, but bogeys on the final two holes pushed her score up a bit.
Junior Sadena Parks is just outside the top-25 of the leaderboard and is 26th at +12. She shot a 76 in the morning and 80 in the afternoon.
Karinn Dickinson is tied for 38th at +14 with rounds of 81 and 77.
Kelli Bowers shot an 82 in the morning and improved with a 77 in the afternoon. She is tied for 44th at +15.
A Ram Choi shot an 84 and 78 and is tied for 55th.
Final round action will begin in a shotgun format starting tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m.
