NEWPORT, Calif. -- Trevor Simsby hit the first-ever hole-in-one of his golf career on the way to recording the tournament's low round and Washington rose from third to second among 13 teams competing at The Battle at the Beach on Monday.
Simsby had his share of memorable swings and putts on the way to a 5-under 65 at the North Course at Pelican Hills Golf Course, but his ace with a six iron on the 188-yard, No. 6 hole will be the one everybody is talking about.
"He actually hit the shot pretty poorly," explained Husky coach Matt Thurmond following the second round. "But, he hit it right where you're supposed to miss it and it rolled off the bank, right into the hole."
Simsby's round got off to a rocky start with a bogey on No. 2, but he immediately followed up with a birdie on No. 3. His ace really got thing rolling, as he backed that up with birdies on No. 7 and No. 8. He was even par for the next nine holes before wrapping up his round with a birdie on No. 18.
"Trevor's been playing well at home," said Thurmond of his freshman who carded a 4-over 74 during Monday's first round. "A 65 -- no matter who you are -- is an amazing round today and to have it be a freshman in his second-ever tournament makes it extra special."
Simsby is -1 for the tournament and tied for sixth. Teammate Chris Williams shot a 1-over 71 on the day and is tied with Simsby and three others at 1-under 139.
The icing on the cake for the Huskies is that they had the low round of the day, a 2-over 352. They enter tomorrow's final round trailing San Diego by two shots.
San Diego is +1 overall, while the Huskies are +3. UCLA is third at +6.
San Diego's Kenneth McCready leads the tournament at -8. He has a three stroke lead over UCLA's Connor Driscoll.
Ty Chambers, who shot a 66 in the first round to be second heading into today's action, shot a 75 and is tied for 13th at +1 overall.
Charlie Hughes is tied for 11th after his second-consecutive even-par 70 at the 6,900-yard course.
Tze Huang Choo celebrated his birthday by recording six birdies, but also had a pair of doubles and three bogeys to finish at +1 for the day. He is tied for 30th at +4 overall.
Kevin Spooner is tied for 72nd.
Tomorrow's final round gets rolling at 7:00 a.m.
