NEWPORT, Calif. -- Husky junior Ty Chambers shot a 4-under 66 in the first round of the Battle at the Beach to lead Washington's combined 1-over 351 on Sunday.
Chambers had five birdies and just one bogey and entered the clubhouse at Pelican Hills Golf Club in the lead with several other golfers still on the course. By day's end, Chambers was second, but Coach Matt Thurmond was still impressed.
"Awesome," is how Thurmond described Chambers' round. "It was just really a solid all-around effort. He hadn't had an under-par round in a tournament for us and for him to finish the way he did is pretty cool."
Chambers closed out his round with a clutch birdie on No. 18.
He made the turn on the par-70, 6,900-yard North Course at 3-under, bogeyed No. 11, before converting a birdie opportunity on No. 13 and closing out his round with a final birdie on No. 18.
San Diego's Kenneth McCready eventually surpassed Chambers and has a one-stroke lead heading into Monday's second round. San Diego leads the team competition at -2, Augusta State is second at even par and Washington and Arizona State are tied for 3rd at +1.
In the six-count-five tournament format, only two Huskies - Chambers and defending medalist Chris Williams - shot under-par rounds. Washington was one of the first teams in the clubhouse and was fifth out of 13 teams when this story was published.
Williams was the second-best Husky on the day shooting a 2-under 68. He is tied for fifth.
Williams started hot with two birdies through the first holes, but fell back to even after bogeys on No. 7 and No. 9. Williams birdied No. 10 and 12 before bogeying No. 13. He went on a par streak before closing the round with a birdie on No. 18.
"No. 18 has been really big for Chris at this course. He made a 25-footer last year on that hole for his first collegiate victory. It has been a real turning point for him and he's got good vibes on that 18th," said Thurmond.
Charlie Hughes shot and even-par 70. He was -3 through 13 holes before a double-bogey on No. 14 and a bogey on No. 17 dropped him to even for the day.
Tze Huang Choo was +3 for the day, Trevor Simsby was +4 and Kevin Spooner was +8.
