LAS VEGAS - In game one of two on the day for the No. 10/11 Husky softball team (3-0), UW won its third-straight by mercy rule in five innings with an 18-5 victory over Mississippi State (0-3).
Washington scored in the first four innings of the game and spread 10 hits throughout the game. Mississippi State collected nine hits. The Huskies drew 14 walks in the game, a new school record. The previews record was 11 vs. Arizona in 1996.
Freshman Whitney Jones (Upland, Calif.) earned her second start in the circle picking up her first win. She allowed five runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings pitched. Lindsey Dunlap was the losing pitcher for MSU, allowing 11 runs in 2.0 innings.
In the first inning the Huskies picked up five runs, the first by Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) on a ground out by Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.). Jenn Salling then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jerrin Fa'asua (Oceanside, Calif.).
Niki Williams (Mission Viego, Calif.) and Morgan Stuart (Riverside, Calif.) scored a bloop single to left by Jones with two outs. Jones scored from second on a single to right by Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.).
The Huskies got six more in the second as Salling scored on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded, Jones was hit by a pitch; there was an illegal pitch and Taylor Smith (Olympia, Wash.), Pohlman and Salling walked to bring in more runs.
In the bottom of the second, the Bulldogs got their first run off of Jones by putting together three hits.
UW got two runs back in the third off of a Smith two-out bases loaded single down the left field line that scored Jones and Stuart.
The Bulldogs got to Jones in the third, scoring four runs and cutting the lead to eight. Jones left in the middle of the inning and was replaced by Jenna Clifton (Glendale, Ariz.). Clifton pitched 2.1 innings, allowing two hits with two strikeouts.
In the fourth, the Huskies score five more. Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) walked and eventually scored from second on a single to left center by Stuart. Clifton drove in another with a single to right followed by a two-run double to right center by Inglesby. Inglesby scored the final run on a Bulldog error.
The Huskies were led by Stuart with four runs and Stuart, Inglesby and Smith with two hits each.
Washington will face the host UNLV Rebels this afternoon. That game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. but will probably start late. Listen live to the audio and follow the stats at www.gohuskies.com.
