LAS VEGAS - A nine-run seventh inning for the No. 10/11 Huskies (4-0) helped hold the lead after a late UNLV (2-1) rally in the bottom of the inning to secure the fourth-straight victory for UW with a 17-13 win at Eller Media Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
"There are a lot of little things that we talked about as a team after both games," said head coach Heather Tarr. "I don't think that we feel like we are scoring as many runs as we are. Offensively I guess we are pleased with a lot of the little things but there are still small moments where we have to keep getting better. We are trying to take advantage of teaching moments."
The Huskies took a 3-0 lead in their half of the first inning with a three-run home run by Jerrin Fa'asua (Oceanside, Calif.), her first home run of the season.
UNLV got two runs back in the first off of Husky starter Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.). Inglesby picked up her second complete game victory of the season allowing nine earned runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings pitched. She had a season-high five strikeouts.
Freshman Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) singled to lead off the second and scored on a single up the middle by Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) for a 4-2 Husky lead.
UW got one more in the top of the fifth. Jenn Salling (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) singled to lead off the inning and scored on a single up the middle by Fa'asua.
UNLV tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run home run by Pauline Monreal.
The Huskies responded well by scoring 12 runs in the next two innings. In the sixth, a two-run double by Salling scored two and Niki Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) scored after a bases loaded walk to Morgan Stuart (Riverside, Calif.).
In the top of the seventh, Williams singled to the left side of the infield as Taylor Smith (Olympia, Wash.) scored the ninth run. Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) hit a two-run single to left field to make it 11-5.
Jessica O'Connor started the game in the circle for UNLV. She was handed the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings. Amanda Oliveto pitched 1.0 inning, allowing seven runs on six hits.
Traci Odegard entered with one out in the seventh and Fa'asua took the first pitch from Odegard to center field for her second three-run home run of the game.
Smith then hit her fifth home run in two days, a three-run home run to left field for a 17-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Rebels made a game out of it again by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the inning. Tayler Aleman led off the inning with a solo home run.
Sophomore Baily Harris (Longview, Wash.) entered to pitch with one out and gave up a grand slam to Paige Emerson to cut the lead to 17-12. Jenna Clifton (Glendale, Ariz.) entered to close out the game and got the final two outs after allowing a solo home run.
Fa'asua led the team with four hits and seven RBIs. Pohlman also had four hits in the game.
