EUGENE, Ore. - Freshman Emmett Egger capped off a stellar weekend with a straight set victory in the finals of the PNW Intercollegiates to take home his first college tournament title. Egger, the Issaquah, Wash. native, did not lose a set in his four wins this weekend at Oregon's Student Tennis Center.
In today's final, Egger went up against Pac-12 rival Oregon's top singles player, Alex Rovello. Despite the home support for Rovello, Egger handled Rovello by a 6-4, 6-2 count. That runs Egger's fall singles record to 8-2 overall.
Egger also played in the top flight doubles final with senior Matt Stith. It was the first week the two had played doubles together, as Egger's previous partner, Kyle McMorrow, was competing in the ITA National Indoor Championships in New York. Egger and Stith settled for runners-up after an 8-5 defeat to Oregon's top-seeded duo of Robin Cambier and Jeff Mullen.
In the secondary doubles flight, sophomore Max Manthou and freshman Jeff Hawke earned another win for the Dawgs, as they beat Oregon's Sho Higuchi and Doug Mayeda, 8-3, in the final. Hawke, who went to consecutive third set tiebreakers to make the semis of the secondary singles flight on Saturday, found himself in another grinder today, but this time he could not quite pull off the win, falling to Aaron Clissold, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 in the semis.
This wraps up the fall season for the Husky men's tennis team. Washington hosts the Nordstrom Fall Open later this month, which several Huskies may compete in, but that is an event open to all entrants and will not count towards collegiate match play.
