FLUSHING, N.Y. - Kyle McMorrow started the day with a big win in the consolation draw of the ITA National Indoor Championships, but ran out of steam later in the day in the consolation semifinals to bring his stay at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to a close.
In the consolation quarterfinals, McMorrow scored a 6-3, 6-4 victory over USC sophomore Ray Sarmiento, ranked 15th nationally in the ITA fall preseason poll. That's the second Top-20 win of the fall for McMorrow, himself ranked 22nd.
In the next round he went against Georgia's No. 1 player, Wil Spencer, who is ranked sixth nationally and was the seventh-seed in the main draw before being upset. McMorrow and Spencer were even at 5-5 in the first set, but then Spencer took control with the final two games of the first set, and then rolled to a 6-0 second set win.
