EUGENE, Ore. - The Husky men's tennis team rolled on the first day of the PNW Intercollegiates, hosted by Oregon at the Student Tennis Center. Washington went a combined 9-1 in singles play and put four Dawgs into the quarterfinals of the top singles flight.
Oregon is hosting the tourney for the first time after UW played host the previous two years. Washington and Oregon are joined by squads from Portland, Portland State, Nevada, Idaho, and Seattle U.
A pair of Husky-Duck match-ups in the round of 16 went Washington's way this evening, as sophomore Max Manthou topped Oregon's Jeff Mullen, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, and junior Marton Bots overcame Jose Izquierdo, 6-3, 6-2. Unfortunately the two Huskies will have to play each other in one quarterfinal match-up tomorrow.
Top-seeded freshman Emmett Egger had a first round bye and then had little trouble defeating Portland's Geoff Hernandez, 6-0, 6-2, to make the quarters. Also advancing with two wins was redshirt freshman Nicholas Kamisar, who beat Seattle's Andrew Anderson in the first round and Portland's Michel Hu Kwo in the second round.
Egger and senior Matt Stith also teamed up to reach the semis in the top doubles draw. Freshman Jeff Hawke also advanced in both singles and doubles in the secondary flights.
