FLUSHING, N.Y. - For the second straight day, Husky junior Kyle McMorrow faced a Fighting Illini at the ITA National Indoor Championships, and today he turned the tables, posting a straight set victory in the first round of consolation play.
McMorrow, ranked 22nd nationally, handled 71st-ranked Roy Kalmanovich, 7-5, 6-3. At 5-5 in the first set, McMorrow won five straight games to win the first set and take a 3-0 lead in the second set, then took care of his serve for the win.
Kalmanovich will likely be ranked much higher when the next singles rankings are compiled in January, as he made the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships last month. So it was a good showing for McMorrow, who extended his first trip to National Indoors. On Thursday, McMorrow had lost to Kalmanovich's Illinois teammate, Dennis Nevolo, in the main draw first round.
On Saturday McMorrow will face either Ray Sarmiento of USC or Lucas Jovita of Rollins in the consolation quarterfinals. Should he win, the consolation semifinals will also be played on Saturday.
