SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- Washington rallied late but it was not enough to overcome the leaders on Wednesday in the final round of the 30th Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at Sahalee Country Club.
The Huskies entered the day fourth in the team standings and ended up tied for third with defending tournament champions California at +36 overall.
The tournament host Huskies combined to shoot 17-over par on the front nine, but bounced back on the last nine by shooting 6-over.
The Huskies ended with a 303 for the day and entered the clubhouse in fourth with the top three teams still on the course. They waited and followed live scoring and saw the leaders come back to them. Ultimately, they could only catch Cal.
"We let a great opportunity get away from us," lamented Husky Head Coach Mary Lou Mulflur after her team could not overcome a two-stroke deficit to second round leader Colorado. "We knew what we had to do (entering the final round), but we just came up short."

"We gave up too much early and we just couldn't recover from it."
Pac-12 newcomer Colorado ended up winning the tournament shooting 896 (+32). Oregon took home second at +34, followed by Washington and California (+36). Oregon State led the rest of the pack, claiming fifth at +56.
Gonzaga tied for seventh at 932 (+68), while Washington State was 12th at 968 (+104).
For the third-straight day, the Huskies were led by their pint-sized freshman Jennifer Yang. The Coquitlam, B.C. native was paired with two other Canadians and shot a very comfortable 72, despite rainy conditions.
Yang started the day tied for the lead with Oregon's Cassy Isagawa, but was 2-over after five holes before Isagawa even stepped foot on the course. Yang composed herself and rebounded with birdies on No.'s 6 and 16 to end up the tournament with a score of 215 (-1).
"I missed a three-footer, but my putting helped me a lot today," said Yang. "I still made a lot of pars and my chipping and putting were a big reason why."
Isagawa ended up tying with Yang, but both had to settle for a second-place tie. They were upstaged by Nebraska's Madeleine Sheils, who started the day in fifth, but fired a school-record 5-under 67 to claim her first career victory.
For the Huskies, it marked the second consecutive tournament that one of their freshmen finished second among individuals. At the season-opening Cougar Cup, Soo Bin Kim - a high school teammate of Yang - took second.
This week, Kim ended up tied for 27th, fourth amongst Huskies. She started the day tied for 17th, but was 7-over through eight holes. Kim re-focused and went 1-over from there and ended up shooting an 80.
Another UW freshman, Cyd Okino, ended up tied for 12th at +12 (228). Sophomore Kelli Bowers equaled Okino at +12.
Okino fired a 77, while Bowers turned in the Huskies' second-best round of the day with a 75.
Senior Sadena Parks tied for 32nd at +18.
"It's a learning process," said Mulflur about her team. "They're a young group and we know we have brighter days ahead. They're a good group and they will definitely get better."
Washington's three individual competitors - Jennifer Liedes, Brittany Tallman and Darcie Richmond - ended up 41st, 46th and 46th respectively.
The Huskies return to action next week when they travel down to the Bay Area for the Stanford Intercollegiate (Oct. 14-16).
