Record Round Propels Huskies Into Lead At Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Soo Bin Kim each shot 5-under 66 at the Stanford Intercollegiate on Friday to lead the Washington women's golf team to a first place tie with top-ranked UCLA after the first round.
The Huskies combined to shoot a UW record 277 to end up 7 strokes under par at the par-71, 6,148-yard Stanford Golf Course. The 277 is the lowest gross score in team history, but Washington shot a pair of 8-under pars at the same Stanford course back in 2003 for 280 when the course was a par-72.
Washington was paired with No. 1 UCLA, who is the defending NCAA Champion, and Vanderbilt at the 16-team tournament. The Huskies were unfazed by the Bruins and matched them shot for shot.
"They went toe-to-toe with them and didn't back down," Husky Head Coach Mary Lou Mulflur said about her squad, which consists of one senior, a sophomore and three freshmen. "We were not intimidated by them and they just played their game and stayed in their zone."

Vanderbilt is third behind the Huskies at -3, followed by Oregon and Stanford at -2.
Parks and Kim were the Huskies lowest finishers on day one after ended up as Washington's bottom two at last week's Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational. Both golfers showed no residual effects from that finish on Friday.
Kim got things going quicker than Parks, birdying three of the first eight holes to establish her footing at the top of the leaderboard. She ended up with four more birdies on the back nine, which were offset by just two bogeys during the round.
Parks started her day with a bogey on No. 1 and stayed +1 until consecutive birdies on No.'s 7 and 8. She added another birdie on No. 10 before recording her last bogey of the day on No. 13.
Parks would close strong with an eagle on 15 and birdies on No.'s 16 and 17. The senior was able to hole out from 50 yards out on No. 15 to record the lone Husky eagle of the round.
She equaled her career best with today's 66.
The UW duo finished second behind Vanderbilt's Marina Alex, who shot a blistering 6-under 65. A trio of golfers trail Parks and Kim by one shot.
Third amongst Huskies is freshman Cyd Okino, who shot even-par 71. Okino birdied No. 18 to get into the clubhouse tied for 25th.
Sophomore Kelli Bowers had a tale of two nines on the day, shooting a bogey-free 2-under 33 on the front and a birdie-free 5-over 41 on the back. She ended up 3-over 74 on the day and is tied for 57th.
Freshman Jennifer Yang, who led Washington with a second-place finish at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, shot 4-over 75. She was 1-under at the turn, but was +5 on the back nine. She will begin day two tied for 67th in the 90 person field.
Washington will tee off last in Saturday's second round. Huskies are scheduled to begin firing away at 10:00 a.m. from the No. 1 tee.
