Top UW Duo Advances To Doubles Quarterfinals

SEATTLE - Junior Kyle McMorrow and freshman Emmett Egger had an 8-0 win to move on to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships today at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, but both were eliminated from singles in the quarterfinal round.
The day started with a quick doubles win for the Husky pair, beating Dawson-Roberts and Norstrom of St. Mary's without dropping a game. They returned to the court soon after and each picked up round of 16 singles wins. Egger, seeded ninth, took out sixth-seeded Christoffer Konigsfeldt of Cal, 6-3, 6-4. McMorrow, the No. 2 seed, battled back from a slow start to beat Santa Clara's John Lamble, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
But in the evening matches, neither Husky could get much going in the quarters. McMorrow had another slow start, losing the first set to seven-seed Ben McLachlan of Cal, 6-1. He took a 4-3 lead in the second set but McLachlan held serve, broke with a series of passing shots, and then held for the 6-4 win. Egger went up against top-seeded Ryan Thacher of Stanford, and dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision.
Sophomore Max Manthou was looking to knock off a second straight seeded player today after he upended Stanford's fifth-seeded Denis Lin on Saturday, but it was not to be. He took the first set off Oregon's ninth-seeded Alex Rovello, but Rovello picked up his play and came back for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win in the round of 16.
In the morning, UW's other remaining doubles tandem of senior Matt Stith and redshirt freshman Nicholas Kamisar were defeated by Oregon's fifth-seeded tandem of Cambier and Mullen, 8-2.
Two rounds of doubles are scheduled for tomorrow, with McMorrow and Egger playing their quarterfinal match at 10 a.m. The Regional winners in singles and doubles earn an automatic bid to the ITA National indoor Championships next month in New York.
