PORTLAND, Ore. - After giving up an early goal, the Washington men's soccer team fought back to tie the match less than 15 minutes later before falling in the final minutes in the season opener vs. Evansville, 2-1, in Portland, Ore.
The stat sheet was nearly the same in every category as Washington (0-1) had 12 shots and six on goal while the Aces (1-0) fired 14 shots and five on goal.
"We made two big mistakes at bad times in the match, one early in the game on a corner kick and they scored easily and then we tied the score until late when we had another lapse in the back," said head coach Dean Wurzberger. "We didn't have time to answer after the second goal. It was our first game and we played a lot of players. Hopefully we can work on that and get it back on Sunday and come away with a better result."
Evansville struck first with a header off of a corner kick in the sixth minute by Robby Lynch. The assist came from Blake Schneider.
Two Washington freshmen combined for the tying goal in the 20th minute as Michael Harris (Shoreline, Wash.) fed the ball off of a deflection to John Crenshaw (Marysville, Wash.) who struck the ball to the lower right corner.
The next 60 minutes were a battle with some great shots and saves on both ends until Evansville knocked in the winning goal in the 88th minute. Mike Luttrull went one-on-one with Husky keeper Spencer Richey for the win. The assist came from Tom Irvin.
Richey, a freshman from Seattle, Wash., earned the start in goal, making three saves.
Senior transfer Daniel Gray (Tacoma, Wash.) came off the bench and led the team with four shots and two on goal. Junior captain Brent Richards (Camas, Wash.) led the starters with three shots on goal.
Washington finishes out the Portland/Nike Invitational by taking on Northern Illinois at 11 a.m. NIU tied Portland in the second match of the day.
