SEATTLE - On a great Friday night at Husky Soccer Stadium, the No. 21 UW men's soccer team shutout cross-town rival Seattle University 2-0. The Huskies improve to 5-1-1, tying last season's win mark and have not lost since their opening game of the season. This is the best start for head coach Dean Wurzberger's team since the 2006 season.
"The best thing about the game was the shutout," said Wurzberger. "My hat is off to Seattle U, they gave a lot of effort. I thought we were a little tired after Wednesday's game and Seattle was fresh so we got over run but I'm happy for the goals and we got everyone on the roster to play."
The Huskies controlled the ball around the net taking 19 shots, 10 on goal, compared to 11 shots and two on goal for the Redhawks (2-4-1).
Senior Stephen Fung (Honolulu, Hawai'i) picked up his fourth win on the season in goal, earning the combined shutout with freshman goalkeeper Spencer Richey (Seattle, Wash.). Fung started the game playing in 78 minutes and Richey entered in the second half.
Washington's Casey McCool, a junior from Bend, Ore., scored his first goal of the season, and the second of his career, in the 22nd minute. Senior Matt Van Houten (Portland, Ore.) took the corner kick and McCool's shot came off of a deflection from a defender.
His second goal was in the 62nd minute. He shot the ball to the left side on assists from junior Brent Richards (Camas, Wash.) and senior Brad Keller (Scottsdale, Ariz.)
Seattle made several great attempts on goal, pressuring the Huskies on fast breaks throughout the game. Sean Morris had both shots on goal for SU but they were both saved by Fung.
McCool, Richards and senior Daniel Gray (Tacoma, Wash.) each had two shots on goal. Richards took seven total shots.
In game one of the Husky Fever Classic, Portland defeated UC Davis 2-1 in overtime. The Husky Fever Classic concludes on Sunday as the Dawgs host UC Davis at 1 p.m. Portland will play at Seattle at 4 p.m. that day.
