McMorrow Takes PNW Intercollegiate Title

SEATTLE - Husky sophomore Kyle McMorrow completed an impressive run to the PNW Intercollegiate singles title today at the Nordstrom Tennis Center with a straight set win over his teammate, senior Tobi Obenaus. McMorrow did not drop a set en route to his first college tournament title.
The 2009-10 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, McMorrow won four matches in three days, only once going past 6-3 in any of his sets. This afternoon he held off senior Tobi Obenaus, 6-3, 6-3 in an all-Husky singles final. McMorrow had also had to get past another Husky, senior Martin Kildahl, in the semifinals.
Earlier in the day, however, it was Obenaus and Kildahl who surprised McMorrow and senior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan in another all-purple affair in the doubles final. Obenaus and Kildahl, seeded third, took the title from the top-seeds with a tiebreaker victory, winning 7-3 in the tiebreak.
Freshman Max Manthou came up just short in his first shot at a tournament title of his own, as he fell in the second flight singles final to Ratan Gill of Portland, 6-2, 6-2. Manthou and junior Matt Stith were also in the second flight doubles final, but were upended 8-4 by Akbar and Knox of Idaho.
This wraps up the fall season for the Huskies, though some may play in the Nordstrom Fall Open in two weeks, though that will not count towards yearly records. Dual play will begin on January 14 at home against Gonzaga.
