UW Remains Third After Two Rounds of Edean Invite

LAKEWOOD, Wash. -- The Husky women are third out of 15 teams after two rounds of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational and Anya Alvarez leads the UW individuals tying for 12th at Lakewood's Tacoma Country & Golf Club.
The golfers were greeted with a morning fog that delayed play by 30 minutes, but once the clouds cleared, it was a beautiful, sunny day. California took full advantage of the pristine conditions by shooting a collective 5-under par 283 to take a seven-stroke lead over USC heading into Wednesday's final round. Cal is an impressive -9 overall.
Washington is the next closest team to Cal and USC and is +15. Pepperdine (+20) is fourth, followed by fifth-place UC Davis (+24). Oregon, who started the day tied for ninth, moved into a sixth-place tie with Stanford at +29. New Mexico State, Oregon State and San Jose State round out the top-10.
Just two players shot in the 60's on Tuesday and both belong to 2009 tournament champions California. Emily Childs, who leads the tournament at 8-under overall, shot her second-consecutive 68. She holds a four-stroke lead over teammate Joanne Lee. USC's Lizette Salas and Sophia Popov at tied for third at -2 overall. Cal's Pia Halbig - who shot a 69 - is fifth at 1-under overall.
Alvarez is 3-over par 147 and tied for 12th with two other golfers. Karinn Dickinson was the lone Husky in the red for the day, shooting a 1-under 71 to move from 35th to 15th overall. She is tied with teammate Sadena Parks at +4 overall.
Sophomore Darcie Richmond is tied for 29th, entering the final round at +7. Kelli Bowers is one stroke behind and tied for 32nd.
"It was a frustrating round for us," said Husky head coach Mary Lou Mulflur, whose "A" team finished the final three holes with six bogeys and two birdies. "We started out okay, but we just could not quite bring it on in the backside. The final two holes are makeable birdies and we did not take advantage of our length."
Nicole Ferrero is +9 overall and tied for 36th to lead the Husky "B" Team. Brittany Tallman is +14 and tied for 55th, followed by A Ram Choi (+17, 64th), Katie Saucier (+19, T66th) and Keely Lavelle (+24, 71st).
Final round action begins an hour earlier that the previous two rounds with the first team teeing off from No. 10 at 8:00 a.m.
