Huskies Finish Strong To Take Third At Edean Invite

LAKEWOOD, Wash. -- The Husky women's golf team saved their best for last, shooting a combined 2-under 286 during Wednesday's final round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational to finish third behind dueling California and USC.
California entered Wednesday's sun-filled round at Tacoma Country & Golf Club leading by seven strokes but had to hold off a hard-charging USC squad to win by two. The Golden Bears combined to shoot an impressive 8-under 280 at the Par 72, 6,078-yard track, but USC recorded a blistering 13-under 275 during final day action.
California had four players finish in the top-10, led by tournament winner Emily Childs. Childs shot a 2-under 70 and finished at 10-under to win by three strokes. USC had three players in the top-10, including second-place finisher Lizette Salas (-7). Cal's Pia Halbig (-6) was third, followed by USC's Lisa McCloskey (-5) who shot an 8-under 64 on Wednesday.
Washington's "A" team had three golfers finish under par on Wednesday to help the Huskies run away with third at their home tournament. Although the Huskies finished at +17 overall and were 28 strokes behind second-place USC, they were 17 strokes better than fourth-place Stanford and Pepperdine - who each ended up at +30. Overall, the Huskies finished ahead of four teams ranked higher than them in the Golfstat.com and Golf World rankings.
"Especially today, we played well, so we feel better," said Husky head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "Knowing that you can have a couple people score under par on a really good golf course...that helps everyone's confidence. The trick now is to figure out why that happened and build on that from here on out."
Senior Anya Alvarez was the only Husky to crack the top-10 ending up +1 overall (71-76-70-217) to finish ninth. Alvarez's teammates Sadena Parks (70-78-71-219) and Karinn Dickinson (77-71-71-219) were +3 and ended up tied for 11th. Each of the three Huskies recorded a birdie over the final three holes to improve their score and place on the leaderboard.
Fellow "A" teamers Kelli Bowers and Darcie Richmond each ended up at +10 and tied for 29th out of 75 competitors.
Washington's "B" team was 14th out of 15 teams at +77 overall. Senior Nicole Ferrero led the second team's charge, finishing tied for 33rd at +11.
Freshman A Ram Choi shot a 2-over 74 on Wednesday and was 52nd overall at +19. Brittany Tallman (+20) was 55th, followed by Katie Saucier (+28, 64th) and Keely Lavelle (+33, 69th).
The Huskies are off until they play at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Oct. 25-27.
