BERKELEY, Calif. - The UW men's soccer team nearly pulled its second upset over a top 25 team this season, falling in double OT in the 109th minute to No. 10 Cal, 2-1, in Berkeley, Calif., Sunday afternoon.
Washington is now 9-5-1 on the season and 3-4-0 in the Pac-10 while Cal improves to 11-2-3 and 7-1-1 in the league.
"I'm really proud of the effort our guys put in," said head coach Dean Wurzberger. "We did absolutely everything we could. We didn't win the game but it wasn't because we were short of effort. They used everyone ounce once of energy they had in them. It's a tough place to play and we outshot them. As proud as I was on Friday I was just as proud today. We battled and had a chance to win it in OT. I'm really proud of the guys. We are excited about how well we did down here. We are going to have a great spirited week and get ready for our two home games. Everyone played well and it was a real team effort."
Freshman John Crenshaw (Marysville, Wash.) gave the Huskies the lead in the 22nd minute for his second career goal. The goal was assisted by sophomore Chris Brundage (Gig Harbor, Wash) and junior Jamie Finch.
Without senior captain and central defender Taylor Mueller on the field, Mueller picked up a red card in Friday's game at Stanford and was therefore unable to play in this game, the Huskies still kept the hot-shooting Golden Bears off the board until the 78th minute. Servando Carrasco converted a penalty kick to even the score.
After a scoreless rest of the second half, the game went into the first overtime. Husky goalkeeper Spencer Richey, a freshman from Seattle, Wash., made four saves in the period as the game went into the second overtime period.
With both teams firing shots on goal in the second OT, the game went back and forth and looked to be heading to a draw. However, Cal scored in the 109th minute on a goal by Hector Jimenez on an assist by Davis Paul.
Washington took 22 total shots, 11 on goal while Cal took 20 shots with 10 being on target. Richey made eight saves in goal while Cal keeper David Bingham made 10 saves.
Junior Brent Richards (Camas, Wash.) led the Huskies with six shots, four on goal. Gray had four shots, two on goal.
The Huskies return to Seattle to play their final two games of the season at Husky Soccer Stadium next weekend as they host UCLA on Friday at 7 p.m. and San Diego State on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
