Huskies Battle With No. 12 UCLA

SEATTLE - The Huskies played a top 12 team for the second-straight game falling to No. 12 UCLA, 1-0, on Friday night at Husky Soccer Stadium. UW falls to 9-6-1 overall and 3-5 in the Pac-10 while the Bruins are 12-4-1 and 6-2 in league play.
Washington outshot UCLA 9-5 in the first half as the entire game went back and forth with great possessions by all. The overall shot count was 12-11 UCLA. UCLA won the corner kicks, 5-4.
The game-winner for the Bruins came in the 64th minute as Chandler Hoffman scored his first goal of the season on an assist by Shawn Singh and Eder Arreola. The goal came about on a scramble around the net on the left side.
"It was a tough game for us tonight," said head coach Dean Wurzberger. "I thought both teams played attacking mindsets, got at it and went at each other. UCLA was dangerous and have great team speed. It was hard for us to get away from them because they are athletic all over the field, but we had chances. We just lacked some sharpness in the final area. We just needed that little break that they got. It was a pretty even game overall. We had chances right to the very end."
Senior Matt Van Houten (Portland, Ore.) led the Huskies with three shots, including one at the buzzer that went just wide right and almost tied the match.
Freshman goalkeeper Spencer Richey (Seattle, Wash.) made five saves in goal and is now 5-4-0 in the net on the season.
The final home game of 2010 for the men's soccer team is Sunday at 1 p.m. vs. San Diego State. The five seniors on the year's team will be honored with their families on the field prior to the game.
