LOS ANGELES - On national television (Fox Soccer Channel) Friday night in Los Angeles, the Huskies were more than impressive picking up a 1-0 shutout over UCLA in Pac-10 play. This is just the third win for UW overall against UCLA. The first came in 1995 in Los Angeles, 2-1, and the second was a 1-0 UW victory in Seattle in 2000.
The Huskies improve to 11-6-1 overall and 4-3 in the Pac-10, while UCLA falls to 9-7-1 and 2-4.
"We are ecstatic about the win," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "It's never easy to beat UCLA, especially on the road. We talked about getting an early goal and we did exactly that. We had some good chances in the second half too. They are super dangerous. Kate (Deines), Molly (Boyd) and Jorde (LaFontaine-Kussmann) did a great job in the back. I can't say enough about how our entire team came together and responded with a great road win. We are hoping for another one on Sunday."
The Bruins took 14 shots, five on goal while UW took seven with one shot on goal, but that proved to be all the Huskies would need.
Junior Alex Webber (Poway, Calif.) scored her second goal in three games in the 18th minute. The play started when the UW goalie, Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann dropped kicked the ball about 30 yards out in front of UCLA's goal where junior Sarah Martinez (Des Moines, Wash.) headed the ball to Webber who dribbled passed a couple of defenders and sent the ball by the Bruins goalkeeper.
LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.) made five saves in the game against a tough and fast UCLA team that took several dangerous shots on goal. She improves to 8-6-1 in goal and now has five shutouts.
Freshman Lindsay Elston (Sammamish, Wash) and senior McKenna Waitley (Coronado, Calif.) each took two shots for the Huskies.
UW will face No. 23 USC on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Los Angeles.
