ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Matt Thurmond knew his young Husky golf squad would experience some growing pains during the 2010 fall season, and the U.S. Collegiate Championship that wrapped up on Tuesday at The Golf Course of Georgia served as a perfect example.
Washington never truly got on track during the 54-hole tournament and ended up 11th out of a very competitive 15 team field. The Huskies fired a 12-over par 300 in the final round and ended up at a combined 30-over 894 for the tournament.
Georgia Tech ran away from the rest of the field after finishing at -28 (836) to win by 27 strokes over UCLA .
All five Yellow Jackets finished among the top-seven, including tournament winner James White. White ended up at -12 for a five stroke win over USC's T.J. Vogel.
The day began harmless enough for the Huskies as they made the turn at +2, starting a charge up the leaderboard. From there, the tides turned for the Husky quintet and scores began to rise.
The 14th hole was particularly brutal for the UW-five as they recorded three bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey. Comparatively, the Huskies had birdies or better on nine holes on the front, but only had four on the back - three coming from sophomore Charlie Hughes.
Hughes was a bright spot for the Huskies during the round, shooting a team-best 73 on the par-72 7,017-yard Lakeside Course. The Canadian entered the round struggling by his standards with a 77 and 75 during the first two days of action, but was finally able to hit some good golf shots on the final day. He had four birdies through his first 36 holes, but had three birdies and an eagle on Tuesday to double his tournament total.
Hughes ended up 45th overall at 225 (+9) - third amongst Huskies.
Chris Williams was the top-finishing Husky tying for 31st after shooting a 222 (+6). He ended his tournament with a 2-over 74. He was 1-under through 13 holes before a bogey on No. 14 and double bogey on No. 16.
Freshman Cory McElyea tied for 34th at 7-over (223), one shot behind Williams. McElyea was even through 13 holes but bogeyed No. 14 and No. 18. The UW rookie was 2-over after six holes but rebounded nicely with back-to-back birdies on eight and nine.
Junior Jens Bracht entered the final round at 2-over and quickly got to even par with birdies on the first two holes, but lost his Midas touch from there. He came into the day with eight bogeys over the first 36 holes, but suffered through a stretch of nine bogeys over his final 16 holes.
Bracht ended up shooting a 7-over 79 and finished at 9-over 225 and tied with Hughes for 45th.
Ty Chambers also fired a final round 79 and finished 66th at +16 overall.
The Huskies return to action on Nov. 8, playing 54 holes over three days in the Gifford Intercollegiate at San Martin, Calif.
