SEATTLE - Junior Alex Webber and senior Kellye Joswick each scored in the second half as the UW women's soccer team shutout Oregon (4-8-3, 0-3-1) at Husky Soccer Stadium Friday night, 2-0.
The Huskies are now 10-5-1 on the season and 3-2-0 in Pac-10 play. This is the third-straight season the Dawgs have earned 10 or more wins.
"I thought both teams played extremely well," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "There were a lot of scary moments for us early in the game where we dodged a lot of bullets and then the same thing at their end, but overall I thought it was a gutty performance for our team."
Oregon took control of the ball early in the game and outshot UW 7-5 at the half.
The first goal of the game came in the 51st minute as Webber (Poway, Calif.) took a shot that was deflected by the Oregon keeper, Lindsay Parlee, and then scored on the rebound. It's the second goal of the season for Webber. She ended with five shots on goal.
"We got a goal and kept pressing for the second which was a big relief," said Gallimore. "Oregon is a talented team and it's just now going their way but I have a lot of respect for them and our team did a good job to get two on them."
The insurance goal came from Joswick (Placentia, Calif.) in the 81st minute in front of the left post on cross by senior McKenna Waitley (Coronado, Calif.). It's the fourth goal of the season for Joswick and the third assist for Waitley.
"One of the biggest difference makers for us tonight was the way McKenna played," Gallimore added. "She's been trying to find her stride and she found it tonight. She held the ball for us, she play-made for us, she attacked, she created and she helped us be better and she was great tonight."
In the end, the Huskies were outshot 13-12 but won the corner kicks, 7-3.
Junior Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.) improves to 7-5-1 in goal, making four saves. It is her fourth career shutout as a Husky.
The Huskies will play their final game at Husky Soccer Stadium on Sunday at noon vs. Oregon State. The Beavers are 12-1-1 overall and 4-0-0 in Pac-10 play. Before the game, UW will honor the five seniors on this year's team.
