PALO ALTO, Calif. - Husky senior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and sophomore Kyle McMorrow won twice today to move into the finals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships and are now just one win away from earning a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships. The finals will be played Tuesday at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center.
Nedunchezhiyan and McMorrow also reached the quarterfinals in the singles draw with wins this afternoon, but both were knocked out in the early evening.
Play was backed up after rain washed away most of Sunday's matches, so both Huskies wound up playing four matches today. Doubles was up first, and the third-ranked UW pair defeated Sacramento State's Malko and Millan, 8-4 to reach the semis. Next they earned an 8-5 win over Dahan and Cueto of California.
In the finals, they will face another pair of Golden Bears in Chris Konigsfeldt and Nick Andrews, the fourth-seeds. The region champs will advance to the National Indoor Championships next month in New York.
Next came singles, and both Huskies continued their winning ways. Nedunchezhiyan topped Kyle Dandan of Santa Clara, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. McMorrow won in straight sets of Lucas Tirelli of St. Mary's, 6-4, 6-3.
In the quarterfinals, McMorrow's run was stopped by the No. 2-seed, Alex Clayton of Stanford. Clayton reached the semis with a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Konigsfeldt, the fifth-seed, upended Nedunchezhiyan in a long battle, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
