LA QUINTA, Calif. - After round one of The Prestige at the Stadium Course of PGA WEST, the Husky men's golf team is tied for third in the team standings and sophomore Charlie Hughes is tied for third on the individual leaderboard.
Washington was one of three squads to shoot a 294 (+6) on Sunday at the 7,300-yard par 72 course. California was the only team out of 15 under par at -2, while Arizona State recorded the second-best round of the day at +2. Joining Washington at +6 were Stanford and San Diego.
The competitors started the tournament via a shotgun start and Hughes shot out of the gate like a bullet with a birdie on No. 8 -- his first hole. He would bogey the next two holes but righted the ship quickly with back-to-back birdies on No. 11 and 12. He added another birdie on 14 to go two-under par, but bogeyed No. 18 to move back to 1-under. Hughes closed out his round with birdies on No. 5 and No. 7 to enter the clubhouse with a 3-under 69.
Hughes is tied with Pepperdine's Johnny MacArthur and San Diego's Alex Ching in third. Leading the way is Stanford's Cameron Wilson, who shot a 5-under 67. In second is Arizona State's Thomas Buran.
Chris Williams, the 2010 Freshman of the Year, shot an even par 72 and is the next highest Husky in the standings. He is tied for 13th with two other competitors after completing his round with three birdies and three bogeys.
Ty Chambers shot a first round 76 (+4) and is tied for 38th. He was even after six holes but a double bogey on his seventh hole (No. 15) pushed him to 2-over. He would bogey No.18 before a six-hole stretch of par golf and a bogey on his next-to-last hole of the day pushed his score to +4.
A pair of true freshmen -- Cory McElyea and Gerrit Chambers -- each shot a 5-over 77 and are tied for 48th. Chambers is competing as an individual.
Junior Jens Bracht struggled throughout his round carding a couple double bogeys and only one birdie on his way to a 9-over 81. He is tied for 71st out of 81 competitors.
Second round action begins at 12:30 p.m. on Monday with the golfers again commencing via a shotgun start.
