Washington Head Coach Tia Jackson
General Comments: We played a very good team pretty darn well. We were a couple of missed layups away from keeping that game really close. To have it within six with 41 seconds to go, we continued to compete. Kansas State wanted to sub there reserves in right away and save their players, but they couldn't do that. Not against us. I think our players competed their tails off. I'm excited about where we're headed going into Pac-10 play. I know the record doesn't reflect that, but I think we've got a lot to show this Pac-10 conference.
On Kansas State's Big Three: They do that against everybody. One of the things we did this well was the pre-season scheduling. I don't think there are going to be any surprises. From playing against All-Americans to players of the year, we've played them all. We are extremely prepared to go into the conference. We know we can compete in this type of situation against this type of competition.
On changing the starting lineup: I think they've earned the right to be on the floor. Over the last few games they have earned that. Until it is broken I'm pretty sure I'll keep. We've got playmakers. It is recognizing when to use what you've got.
On freshman Liz Lay: She was 2-4, 50 percent from the floor with two rebounds in eight minutes; I'll take that. She did well. She's still not 100 percent. I'll tell you that she can bang and compete against anybody, even at 65 percent. We are happy to get those first game jitters out of the way.
Freshman Liz Lay
On Post-Game Feelings: "I feel good, I was just really excited to be out there with my team and be on the floor a little bit. It's been a while so just being out there was really refreshing. I got the jitters out."
On Coming Off Injury: "I've been going day to day so I wasn't really expecting to come out and do amazingly well. It's been frustrating but I've been positive and I have my teammates behind me, they believe in me, I believe in me so I know I can do it."
Junior Sami Whitcomb
On Kansas State: "They're a great team and they're lead by some really great players. They're tough to stop but I think we really did compete against them. They're a good challenge for us going into Pac-10 play and definitely a good team. They're 12-0 already this year and I think that's indicative of just about how good they are.
On Half-Time Mood: "I think we were feeling pretty confident and positive. We fought back and got it to a three point game. I feel like we had a little bit of a momentum swing like we could come out the first four minutes of the second half and really make plays. That's what we were trying to do but it didn't really work out like that."
On What Liz Lay Brings to the Team: "In practice she can't always do every drill that we do but when she does, you know she's in that drill. You feel her presence on the court. She's so exciting to watch. She rebounds like an animal and every play you just see how hard she's working. She wants to do everything she can for this team."
