STANFORD, Calif.-- Stanford freshman Michelle Smith hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to break up a 3-3 tie and lift the Cardinal to the 6-3 victory over No. 20 Washington. The win improves No. 8 Stanford to 27-7 on the season and 3-1 in the Pac-10, while the Huskies fall to 19-13 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
Stanford took the early 3-0 lead in the first inning with three hits off of starter Ashley Boek. Catalina Morris led off with a single through the left side and Lauren Lapping walked. Smith then doubled to centerfield, scoring Morris. Meghan Sickler drove in two more runs with a double to left centerfield. UW replaced Boek with Caitlin Noble and got out of the inning with a fly out and two strikeouts.
The Huskies battled back in the fourth inning, knotting the score at 3-3 with a two-out three-run home run by Noble. Kathy Fiske reached base with a single through the right side and Sarah Hyatt reach on a fielder's choice. Noble took a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for her first career home run.
Stanford answered in the fifth frame, using a three-run blast by Smith to earn the eventual 6-3 victory. Morris singled to right field and Lappin reached base on a error. Smith then hit her 11th home run of the season to give Stanford the win.
Cardinal pitcher Becky McCullough (9-1) earned the victory as she held Washington to three runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
Noble (7-5) took the loss as she allowed three runs on three hits in six innings of relief. She had six strikeouts.
The Huskies and Cardinal play again Sunday at 1 p.m. at Boyd and Jill Family Stadium.
