PALO ALTO, Calif. - Washington's 22nd-ranked men's tennis team showed the rust of playing only one match since March 8, losing 6-1 to 10th-ranked Stanford at the Taube Tennis Center on the Stanford campus. In their first dual of the Pac-10 schedule, the Huskies (10-6, 0-1) dropped a close doubles point and Stanford carried the momentum into singles play where they claimed five of six matches. Washington lost to a top-ten team for the fourth time this season.
The Huskies' doubles teams had gone 7-0 in three matches since a lineup shift at the Arizona State Invitational, but Stanford earned two out of the three closely-contested matches to take the 1-0 lead. Freshman Alex Slovic and senior Nick Weiss moved to 4-0 as partners with their 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles, but KC Corkery and Sam Warburg handed UW's Alex Vlaski and Daniel Chu their first doubles loss at the number one spot, 8-6, and clinched the point.
Junior Peter Scharler picked up the only point for the Huskies at fifth singles, improving his dual record to an excellent 12-2. Scharler was leading Stanford's Carter Morris in the third set when Morris was forced to retire. At No. 1 singles, 6th-ranked Vlaski lost only his third dual match of the season, 6-4, 6-2, to No. 23 Sam Warburg. It was the first time since November that Vlaski lost in straight-sets. 43rd-ranked Alex Slovic went down to defeat for only the fourth time in his career, losing 7-5 in the third set. Three of Slovic's four losses have been tough three-set affairs. Stanford picked up straight-set wins at third, fourth and sixth singles.
Washington faces 29th-ranked California tomorrow, March 27 at 1 p.m. at Berkeley in the final match on what has now been a six-week road trip.
