BERKELEY, Calif. - Washington's men's tennis team produced its most dominating performance in over a month with a 6-1 drubbing of the California Golden Bears at the Hellman Tennis Center. The 22nd-ranked Huskies (11-6, 1-1 Pac-10) captured the doubles point and easily won the top five singles matches to down the No. 29 Golden Bears and earn an important Pac-10 road win. The match ended a six-week, nine-match road trip for UW, which now returns home for five Pac-10 matches to end the regular season.
The Huskies won the doubles point for the fourth time in the past five matches. Freshman Alex Slovic and senior Nick Weiss handled Browne and Minato at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, remaining a perfect 5-0 as a duo. Cal evened the score with a win at third doubles, but junior Alex Vlaski and freshman Daniel Chu pulled out an upset win over the nation's No. 12 doubles team of Briaud and Veress in a tiebreak to clinch the point for Washington.
Washington made quick work of Cal on the singles courts, taking the top four matches in straight sets. All-American Alex Vlaski (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) rebounded from a rare loss yesterday at Stanford by losing only four games in a straight-set win at No. 1 singles. No. 43 Slovic (Pancevo, Yugoslavia) took on Cal's only ranked contender, No. 84 Wayne Wong, and proved to be the stronger of the two with his 6-4, 6-2 win. The win marked Slovic's seventh over a ranked opponent in his freshman campaign. Junior Christoph Palmanshofer (St. Joergen, Austria) and Daniel Chu (Vancouver, B.C.) also ran off straight-set wins at third and fourth singles, respectively.
Junior Peter Scharler won his second match of the weekend, taking the No. 5 singles match in a third set super-tiebreak. Scharler (Salzburg, Austria) was the only Husky to go 2-0 on the weekend and has now won 10 of his last 11 matches. California's only point was earned at No. 6 singles where John Pettit knocked off Weiss (Santa Monica, Calif.) in three sets.
Up next, the men finally return to the northwest to finish the regular season. Friday, April 2 at 2 p.m. the Huskies face Arizona State at Sunday, April 4 at 1 p.m. UW takes on Arizona.
