Washington Head Coach June Daugherty
General Comments: "It was a good start to the tourney. I thought defensively we did some good things the first half. I liked the way we owned the glass. We were able to get into a little running game tonight by mixing it up defensively. In the second half there were some lulls for us and those need to be over Sunday because Creighton will make up pay for them. We're pleased, we'll take the win, and get ready for Creighton."
On Pepperdine keeping the game close: "Mark Trakh does a good job, they just kept rotating players in there and the're very athletic kids. I didn't think Pepperdine let down at all, I didn't think that they quit. They're a good team and fortunately we were able to play all of our kids tonight."
On execution of the offense: "At some points we were not patient, we needed to square up and run our offensive scheme. I think a lot of that was Pepperdine's athleticism, they're very quick."
On Andrea Lalum: "She's really improved a lot on her offensive boards. It was good to see her get out there and go after the boards. She played very well offensively as well. She dominated the inside and penetrated the lane well tonight. She allowed us to get into our type of game in the second half, she was real aggressive and took advantage of her size."
On Creighton: "On paper, they played a really frightening schedule and they were in a lot of those games. We're going to have to play two halves and play a lot better than we did tonight."
Washington Guard Giuliana Mendiola
On the game: "We played a pretty sloppy first half, but a lot better in the second half. We came into the game pretty confident. Our shots weren't falling that much, but we were still trying to get the ball inside."
Washington Forward Andrea Lalum
On team's performance: "We played hard in the first half, in the second half we kind of let up. Remember that we just had two weeks off and we're sick of playing each other. It was really nice to get out there and play in front of our home crowd again. We know we're going to have to go on the road for two, then hopefully bring the championship back to our home crowd. We want to be one of those teams who finishe their seasons on a win."
On her inside game: "I knew that they were going to stay straight behind me with their hands up, so I knew I wanted to take it to her. I took a step back because I knew that she loves to block shots, we had a great scout on her, so I knew what to expect."
